you did everything right as far as i can tell, I'm stumped too! Only thing I can figure is maybe the cage was too confining (I have almost the same exact setup with 7 birds, and if I leave em in too long in the morning they get rammy, they go in at nighttime only).

The problem I'm having is that 2 of em won't let the rest in at dusk unless I intercede, but sounds like NONE of yours wanted to go 'home' at night! but it sounds like you are physically present at 'bedtime', so there's nothing spooking them when it's time to go home?

I have a chicken sitting on 6 guinea eggs in the coop right now. I marked the eggs when it was evident the brody chicken was going to stay on the nest. My guineas are laying more eggs in the nest but I take the new ones and the chicken eggs that get added daily. I will try to candle the eggs this weekend and see if any are alive. At times two guineas are in the same box with the chicken. First thing in the morning momma bird goes out and some other bird always seems to sit on the nest while she is gone. Do yours babysit for each other? If we get keets that hatch I will get them away and put them in a brooder. Meanwhile, new chicken chicks arrive tomorrow. I got everything cleaned and ready today. Bring on the babies X(X( we are excited.

My husband and I both loved your story. Our Guinea's decided to lay eggs out in the woods, I found the nest and brought them inside the chicken coop and I showed the Guinea's where their eggs were at. Well all was well with the Guinea's they started laying their eggs in the coop. Then our chicken decided to start laying her eggs on the same nest. Well I would take the chicken eggs out daily and leave the Guinea eggs alone. Well my chicken decided to lay on 14 guinea eggs. The Guinea's were not happy with that and they did drop some eggs on the coop floor and then took off back to the woods and started a new nest. Well now my Guinea is laying on about 20 eggs in the woods. My male is one happy bird, whenever I go outside he runs back and forth between the nest in the woods and the one in the coop. I am going to have more birds than what I know what to do with.

I had the 8 that I got as 3 days old keets and had them penned up from the start in August last year until the end of March this year. That is for 9 months they were penned up. The one that just showed up we got into the pen in Oct last year with the rest of them and we also let him out in March with the rest so he was penned up for 6 months. This is a lot longer than the 6 weeks everyone suggests. We fed them well and gave them water and lots of room to move around in their pen so they could fly up on their roosts. They would come within a couple inches of us and walk over to us when we called them while in the pen with them but they didn't want us to pet them. I was hoping to let them out in the morning every day to free range and eat the bugs and to get them to go into the pen every night giving them food they liked and keeping their water in the pen. We also had a light on a timer that goes on 1 hour before sunset and shuts off 1 hour after sunset. They seemed to survive during the day just fine. Every night we seemed to lose one or two of them and they didn't come back around the house. We couldn't get them into the pen at all even when we put their favorite food Corn Bread in the pen for them.

You have to keep them locked up for 6 weeks so they always come back. By letting them out everyday, they thought the trees were their roosting area and eventually all taken by predators; fox, racoon, owls, hawks. I had 6 show up one day at my home and before I actually knew what they were, there was only 1 left. She free ranged and slept in the trees by herself for 2 years until I finally got her in a dog crate. I kept her in the garage overnight until we got the pen finished but she was fine but carried on for awhile since it was getting dark and she had it in her mind she had to fly to the nearest tree. I have her captured for 2 1/2 years now and she has a buddy but I still do not let them free range. Most people tell me I am not being fair since they eat bugs, and they are suppose to be out and about, but I have them both for pets and they will stay penned up as long as I have them. I have to many hawks in my area and if I let them out, they would have been gone along time ago.

We live in western PA and last year in March we had a male guinea fowl show up out of no where. We really liked him and fed him and took care of him and he followed us around outside and ate a lot of bugs and stayed around our house. We couldn't get him to go into a cage so he just free ranged around our house and slept in our trees close to our house. So in August we found someone that had 3 day old keets and bought 8 more. We kept them in our garage for 1 month in a dog crate and talked to them daily. Then we built them a cage out of a 6x12x6 dog run, put a roof on it and put fencing underneath it and all around it so they could not get out and put a 1x6x2ft enclosure inside so they could get out of the weather and we put a lot of branches thru the fencing on one side of the cage so they could roost. We moved the 8 small ones into this cage in Sept. The weather turned cold early in Oct last year so we kept them in the cage and got the male that just showed up lured in there too to be safe thru fall and the winter. We had a light that went on 1 hour before dusk and 1 hour after dusk in their cage so that they could get used to it and we called them anytime we fed them so they knew it was food time. We have 21 acres of land with approx 3 acres cleared and the rest wooded. The caged is near my husbands woodpile so they would get some bugs to eat and at the edge of the woods approx 50 ft from the back of our house. About 2-3 weeks ago our trees had enough leaves that we let them out and I thought we did everything I read online so that they would come back. Well when we opened the cage door they came out and all flew right into the trees. We figured out we had 5 males and 4 females from their sounds. One of the new males flew off and we never saw him again. Then our original guinea came up around the house again but he kept squaking the ke-ke-ke-ke sound they make when upset all day. We found out the next day that one of the girls was his. Then later that second day each male had a female and they were staying close to each other. Then the next day they decided to keep going in the woods and come back around the house once or twice a day. From the day we let them out we could not get them to go back into their cage. We keep the light on 1 hour before dusk and 1 hour after dusk, we kept calling guineas guineas guineas like we always did when feeding them and had their water. One came back once and we closed her in the cage that night but when we let her out the next morning she ran out and wouldn't come back near the cage. So they kept showing up around the house each day for a couple of hours and wouldn't go near their cage and then they would disappear around dusk and each day we had less and less of them until we don't have any now? What did we do wrong? Could someone please let us know? We have tried walking thru our woods but they are thick and we haven't seen any signs that they were eaten but we may never know this. My husband thought that he saw two of them down near the power lines that run thru our woods. I really wanted them to stay up near our house like the first one did to eat all the bugs. I want to get more and try again but I am not sure what I did wrong the first time.

I thought I was doing great with this hatch...and now I am at a loss once again.
Around April 21 my dogs looked awful happy laying in the field, seemingly behaving until I realized that they had eaten a whole clutch of guinea eggs. No biggy as I wasn't looking for them or planning on using them, just gross. This led my husband to look around the other field. He found another clutch of about 25 eggs or so. We gathered them up and kept the better looking ones (some were way down in the hole and looked rough). We put them in the coop in a nesting box thinking one of the chickens would go broody. One did a few days later.
Meanwhile, with no established nest outside the guineas started laying in the coop on the floor. Well, liking this idea, I went ahead and left two of the eggs on the floor and they continued to lay. About a week after the chicken went broody...SO DID A GUINEA HEN! So, now I have one chicken sitting on about 12 eggs. And on the floor beneath her is a guinea on an ever growing pile.

Here is the problem...all of the guineas keep sitting next to her, laying more eggs. She nicely scoops them into her clutch and keeps the warm. There are enough now that TWO guineas are sitting on the pile. I am not sure if it is her mate helping her cover her HUGE pile of eggs or if it is another hen doing her duty. Either way, there is at least 30 eggs under them!
:S so...all those eggs aren't going to hatch at the same time, how does this work out? Most of the keets should hatch, I believe, at the end of May, but at this rate we will be hatching into June at least. When do they quit?
They are safe in the coop, I have started to section it off and the next time they leave the nest I will be moving the nest into a cage and hopefully at least one of them will climb in there to cover it. We are planning to sell the keets, we have plenty already.
egg craziness over here! lol :)o

If they have a house to themselves, that is another issue. Sure, they can have the run of the house without a brooder, as long as a light is provided say in a corner for them to get under when they get cold, especially at night.

I would not put them on wood shavings though, until they are 2+ weeks old, which yours already may be.

Lucky keets to have such a nice coop!

We all take the pictures the minute after we clean the box. That is why it is neat looking. :)
They don't poop right away, and these were just day olds.
This year, I am giving them away to friends. 48 so far, with the last 20 eggs due to hatch (hopefully) this weekend. When I come back from Wisconsin relative visiting, I will (hopefully) hatch some for myself. It is killing me to not be able to keep the RP's and chocolates! They are so nice and are eating out of my hand at 4 days old. DH will not babysit keets while I am gone. :)

I have not found that my chicken tractor was any help with my keets. I guess it depends on your location..if it's dry that is good and your predator situation.

I like stationary coops for young and old guineafowl.

Hi JPHOlly,

Sorry I am not hatching this year but excited to hear that you still have guineafowl. I presume they are still eating the ticks in the cemetary next door. Can't you get rid of the deer?

I'm not sure about Mamahen/Connie if she is hatching or not. She is the one that hand raises them and it takes so much out of her to do so. It is so time consuming.

But I think you have a friend nearby that you can get keets from so I don't think that is an issue.

Anyway, I still have six and they are well conditioned to come when called. Solo is now about 9 years old and of course my favorite.

Take care...Good Luck !!

We just lost another guinea hen. :(

Not sure exactly what critter got her, but the others were all in an uproar yesterday afternoon. My daughter went out to see what was up, and she was missing. With 3 girls and 4 boys, two guys were "sharing" her already. They both seem at a loss now.

So now our 2 gals can each have 2 guys, I suppose.

We live in rattlesnake country but we haven't had one on our property since we started keeping chickens and guineas. However, I was asking a person who had had guineas for a long time about it. He said that guineas will kill small snakes but they will just chase away the larger ones. And they will definitly make a lot of noise about it so that you are aware of the intruder.(:D
You don't need to worry about the wildlife. They all seem to co-exist just fine around here.;)
