The Sixth
Day Bird
The Creator, creating the beasts of the field,
In a moment of whimsy could not help but yield
To an urge, and what could be fitter?
"I'll make Me one final whimsical critter!"
He began with the torso, spheroidal, prolate,
With legs short and stubby and toes six or eight.
The head wears a helmet with a strawberry top
And down-dangling wattles either straight or alop.
Most birds are melodious, with a tune for each
He endowed this one with a god-awful screech.
They seldom walk--'tis a run or a trot,
Snatching bugs left and right, one for each polka-dot.
Their mentality makes them insatiably curious.
They greet things strange with clamor furious
He made 'em gregarious to run in a flock
Then, wearily spent, He looked at his clock.
The Sixth Day ebbed into night when He
Grinned as he rested and called it a GUINEA!

Four Ladies & Two Gents
Tis the ides of March
And spring is near,
"The
Chase: is on...
Mating
time is here.
The birds on range
Keep an eye on Fred,
He's their
leader you know,
The
pecking order head.
Looking over the flock
They just can't wait,
Who will
they choose
To
be their mate?
Fred and Spot
Proceed with "the chase",
As Dottie
and Pearl
Feast
on bugs by the gate.
But watching they are
While the gawking males drool,
And they
cackle amongst themselves
As
fred slips by the pool.
OH NO what is this?
Fred lost his lead!
Spot is
now chasing Fred,
Who
is starting to plead!
Well old Fred tired out
And Dottie and Pearl
Have joined
Spot's harem
With
his lavender girl.
But don't worry 'bout Fred,
From the tree up above,
Sat a young
guinea hen Buckwheat
Who
fell madly in love.
Buckwheat and Fred ranged
Together 'til dusk,
Then roosted
indoors
Side
by side filled with lust.
In late March the 4 ladies
Decided to share,
Not their
partners but a nest
Under
an old wicker chair...
As the egg numbers grew from day to day
And the guineas on range continued to
play,
I plugged
in the bator and got it preheated
Then
took all the eggs when the hens were not seated.
In April the eggs in the bator did hatch
It was quite a surprise when one keet
didn't match,
It was not
spotted like Buckwheat, Dottie or Pearl...
Not
a light gray either, not like Lavender Girl.
With free-ranging guineas,
We just never know...
What colors
will hatch
And
so our flocks grow.
Its addictive, amazing,
A fun-thrilling thing,
As each
egg finally hatches
And
the tiny miracles sing...
So beware guinea keepers,
Unless you are ready...
Do not worry
about mates
For
your Spots and your Freddies.

WHAT MY GUINEAS LIKE
my guineas love there millet
they eat it in our barn,
my guineas like our house
they think it is a farm,
my guineas like the garden
it has lots of slugs and
and other bugs,
and my guineas love our family
'cause we give them lots of hugs!

Spin a Spool
a blanket of color, with some red and some green
to lay upon my box of keets, softly peeping, so serene
the little chitter and chatter
and the pitter and patter
all night long this goes as if nothings the matter
when so little sleep am i given
i wonder how i can be so driven
to keep collecting those eggs, day after day
and yet time and again, i still will say
\'guineas are the winged wonder with voices so loud
the sun even moves over, along with the clouds!
and never mind the ticks, the chiggers, or the fleas
with guineas a wanderin, bugs-be-gone with great ease!\'
spin, spin little spool for the babies are a cryin
mamma needs sleep and the little keets are a lyin
all snooze for the night, the house settles in
tomorrow will be another day to begin

The Guinea Days Of Christmas (By JeanneAR, with
JudieLAs help)
On the 1st day of Christmas, my neighbor gave to me
..
A Guinea in an oak tree!
On the 2nd day of Christmas, I had to go and buy
..
2 bags of feed, and a Guinea in an oak tree.
On the 3rd day of Christmas, I had to go again to buy
..
3 waterers, 2 bags of feed, and a guinea in an oak tree.
On the 4th day of Christmas, I went out to build
..
4 roosting poles, 3 waterers, 2 bags of feed, and a guinea in an oak
tree.
On the 5th day of Christmas, I noticed the one guinea was sad, so I
got
.
5 Guinea Hens, 4 roosting poles, 3 waterers, 2 bags of feed, and a guinea
in an oak tree.
On the 6th day of Christmas, I gave them all some treats
..
6 pans of millet, 5 Guinea Hens, 4 roosting poles, 3 waterers, 2 bags
of feed, and a guinea in an oak tree.
On the 7th day of Christmas, I noticed they liked dirt
..
7 dusting holes, 6 pans of millet, 5 Guinea Hens, 4 roosting poles,
3 waterers, 2 bags of feed, and a guinea in an oak tree.
On the 8th day of Christmas, they got in my flowerbeds
..
8 plants debugged, 7 dusting holes, 6 pans of millet, 5 Guinea Hens,
4 roosting poles, 3 waterers, 2 bags of feed, and a guinea in an oak
tree.
On the 9th day of Christmas, they went into the yards
..
9 ticks getting eaten, 8 plants debugged, 7 dusting holes, 6 pans of
millet, 5 Guinea Hens, 4 roosting poles, 3 waterers, 2 bags of feed,
and a guinea in an oak tree.
On the 10th day of Christmas, they found some real tall grass
..
10 grasshoppers jumping, 9 ticks getting eaten, 8 plants debugged, 7
dusting holes, 6 pans of millet, 5 Guinea Hens, 4 roosting poles, 3
waterers, 2 bags of feed, and a guinea in an oak tree.
On the 11th day of Christmas, I went back to the feed store
..
11 keets a-chirping, 10 grasshoppers jumping, 9 ticks getting eaten,
8 plants debugged, 7 dusting holes, 6 pans of millet, 5 Guinea Hens,
4 roosting poles, 3 waterers, 2 bags of feed, and a guinea in an oak
tree.
On the 12th day of Christmas, I gathered up some eggs
..
12 eggs now a-hatching, 11 keets a-chirping, 10 grasshoppers jumping,
9 ticks getting eaten, 8 plants debugged, 7 dusting holes, 6 pans of
millet, 5 Guinea Hens, 4 roosting poles, 3 waterers, 2 bags of feed,
and a guinea in an oak tree.
And all because of
.. The Guinea in the oak tree!!!

Guineas Galore
Naming guineas is the
name of this game,
even when they all
look the same.
Oh, what a delight,
when they all sound alike.
How do you tell them apart?
Just a certain little mark,
or is it that little spark?
That cute little keet.
so cuddly, fluffy, and meek.
"Hades", "Phoenix", "TaDah", "Toby
Keet"
names so cleaver, yet so neat.
"Henny", "Penny", "Benny", "Kenny"
a few names for many.
"Drunkin' Sailor", "Dumas", "Skitters"
names to give you shivers.
"Gracie" & "George" and even "Moon Flower"
what's next, "Lady Will Power"?
Slate, lavender, powder blue,
pied, porcelain, and violet too.
Chocolate, bronze, royal purple, dondotte,
opaline, white and "polka dot".
I'm not poetic like Olchet, Danj,
Jeanne, or Lizzybelle,
But you can never tell,
about this little "Southern Belle."
I can not even make these words rhyme,
And I'll never make a dime.
But some day in time,
I can look back and say this guinea poem's mine.

BetsyOK A song to the
tune of "Jimmy Crack Corn"
Guineas eat corn, but I
don't care.
They eat a lot of bugs, so I don't care.
Roly Polys and slugs are part of their fare.
Our ticks have almost gone away.
Guineas eat some veggies,
but I don't care,
And sample my plants, here and there.
But, oh my, When they take to the air,
Their beauty takes my breath away.
Guineas lay eggs, but I
don't care.
They lay little eggs everywhere.
Abandon their nests without a care;
To start again another day.
Some guineas brood, but
I don't care;
Make nests in the woods, or some other lair.
And just when you think they're no longer any where,
Parade home with lots of keets one day.
